YJ Image Slider - An amazing Joomla Extension

Not often do I get excited about new extensions but this one is simply amazing. As you have noticed we have used YJ Image Slider in plenty of our templates demos

and it has always proven how flexible it can be. Since we are working on our new Joomla Template and YJIS was a perfect candidate for the demo ,I couldn't help noticing that it is still lacking few features so I started adding them .

What I tought it will be few hours work , ended up stretching over 5 days , and we all know what one developer can do in 5 days :).
I remember Silviu saying " Dragan , this is a component not a module ". What came out at the end is one of a kind image slider.

I will mention just few module features and you be the judge:

Use up to 20 images

Responsive image slider

Touch friendly ( simply love this one, broke my iPhone and iPad swiping lol.. )

Create/Delete thumbnails in module slide manager

Upload own thumbnails

Upload images from module slide manager

Enable/disable thumbnails belt navigation

Disable/enable navigation arrows

Position thumbnails navigation anywhere you want ( top , bottom , left , right )

Included latest MediaboxAdvanced version ( Thank you John! )

Combine image/video gallery sets with slides

Added module template creator and editor in module backend

"Slide in use" indicator for active slides

Sexy custom made tooltips

Disable/enable all or any part of the slide per slide ( tooltips, descriptions, titles, intro text )

So the conclusion is... there is always room for improvements no matter how good the product is.
And YJIS v4.0 simply proves that. So go ahead download and go crazy with it.
Stefan did and he cant stop :)
If you get a chance , vote it up on JED ( Thank you! ) .

Cheers!

As we advised in our latest post about Joomla 3.0 , YJSG is getting big makeover and new features that will pave the road to YJSG 2.0 stable release

which is currently version RC1( not available for download ).
We are taking advantage of this upgrade to incorporate all the changes that are in Joomla 3.0 and slowly make transition to YJSG 2.0 where we will move the framework to a Joomla system plugin thus making version updates easier.

Beside the Joomla 3.0 compatibility this is what you can expect from YJSG 1.0.14:

Twitter Bootstrap compatibility for Joomla 3.0 and 2.5 ( J25 requires JBootstrap ).

Backwards compatibility when Jbootstrap plugin is not used.

Additional menu type option to switch built in top menu to a module position.

Beside YJSG default 5 menu systems, we included Bootstrap navigations menus, navbar and nav pill.

YJCompress CSS/JS files compression system plugin for Joomla 30/25

HTML5 compatible.

HTML5 Video.js built in with support for Youtube and Vimeo.

HTML5 shiv, respond.js, selectivizr.js, CSS3 PIE added for IE8 support.

Extended typography that also includes all Bootstrap components and typography.

Live logo editing within template admin.

Font increase/decrease frontend option changed to Javascript based rather than php version

Added .yjscroll Mootools Fx.SmoothScroll class that can be used on any element tag to scroll to.

New YouGrids blue stylesheet with simple CSS coding practice.

As you can see we have our hands full with 1.0.14 and all these changes will also be applied to existing Joomla 2.5 templates/demos. YJSG 1.0.14 and our new template of the month should be released by
10-25-2012 10-31-2012 unless we encounter some unexpected changes which we will advise on time.
Please understand that we rather delay the release than give you untested beta versions.
We do understand that you would like to see what is coming so here are few YJSG 1.0.14 snapshots:

Community. New and shiny Joomla 3.0 is here and is worth checking out.
After months of hard work Joomla! 3.0

has become a new stepping stone to better web development.
Enhanced with brand new responsive administrator combined with Twitter Bootstrap Joomla 3.0 is paradise for templates/extensions developers that do not have to worry about UI anymore.

We are aware that you have many questions and first let us advise you to use Joomla! 3.0 for production websites only if all your 2.5.x templates/extensions are compatible with it. Also note that 3.0 will be obsolete 30 days after Joomla 3.1 is out .

It is up to you to decide to stick with Joomla 2.5 ( which we suggest ) until LTS ( long term release ) Joomla 3.5 comes out. In meantime you might want to visit Joomla 3.0 FAQ and get information from Joomla! Team directly.

About our templates and extensions:

We wanted to keep this a secret until next template release but since Joomla! 3.0 is out we might as well advise you what is coming up. YJSG is about to get a huge makeover (v1.0.14) which will be compatible with Joomla 3.0 and Joomla 2.5. Beside compatibility, we are adding few more features for all Joomla 2.5/3.0 templates like:

HTML5 by default

Twitter Bootstrap ( for Joomla 2.5 with our JBootstrap plugin )

Responsive layout

Copyright notice change within template admin

Default Font Squirrel settings

Improved head code for faster rendering

Improved mobile devices recognition

All this and more will be available to you before our next Joomla! Template release which
is scheduled for 10-15-2012 10-31-2012.

JBootsrap what is that?

While doing some tests on Joomla 3.0 we could not stop thinking about all those Joomla! 2.5.x users that do not want to rush with upgrade but would love to have Twitter Bootstrap in their templates.

To make it easier for all of them we have published JBootstrap system plugin for Joomla 2.5.x that brings Joomla 3.0 boostrap framework to Joomla 2.5. This way you can play with Bootstrap as long as you want, and upgrade on your own terms.

JBootstrap is free for everyone and is released under GNU/GPL V2 license.

With that said we are off to bring you all the new things you deserve and you go ahead and play with Joomla ! 3.0.

Cheers!
Youjoomla Team

Well, we'd probably be happier if everyone in the universe decided to use Chrome for all of their web browsing needs, but that's probably not gonna happen.
Suffice it to say that this is a step in the right direction: the direction of standards compliance.
We wanted to let you know that, going forward, we will no longer be officially supporting or creating new workarounds for these outdated browsers. As always, our existing templates still include ifie options and ifie CSS files for both IE6 and IE7, and we'll continue to include an upgrade notice to help your visitors out, but we're going to be devoting most of our energy to more modern, compliant browsers.

After all, we're talking about a miniscule segment of the market. IE7 usage is somewhere around 4% worldwide, while IE6 is holding steady at around 6%. The vast majority of these outdated installs are located in China.

In this age of ubiquitous broadband, most consumers have no trouble keeping up with the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Safari. Why should IE be any different? That's Microsoft's attitude, anyway.
Go ahead and check out this officially sanctioned website: IE6 Countdown
While not an official Microsoft initiative, the folks behind IE7 Countdown are even more succinct about the development community's feelings about IE:

"If you use Internet Explorer and you don't absolutely have to (e.g. because you have pre- installed software on your company computer and you are not allowed to install any new software), please install a modern browser like Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Opera. If you do have to use Internet Explorer, try at least installing Chrome Frame, which turns IE into a usable browser. And tell your friends to do the same. You will help yourself to better websites and help developers deliver them to you."

We love our customers, and we want to make each and every one of you happy. If you happen to be getting a significant percentage of your traffic from mainland China (or Singapore), by all means pay a visit to our forums. Our members will surely be able to point you in the right direction. Otherwise, it's time to move on.

Bugs will always come up, not because of bad coding

, but because of the sheer volume of changes that the Joomla development team implements every time. Whether it’s bug-fixes or changes in default classes, methods or vars, it’s super-easy to lose track of what goes where.

In the interest of making sure our customers remain stable (and happy), we’re advising all of you to stick with Joomla 2.5 (Long Term Support) until the next LTS version (3.5) arrives. After all, Joomla 3.0 is just a bridge to 3.5, and support will end 30 days after 3.1 sees the light of day. Keeping your sites on the bleeding edge of Joomla releases is just asking for trouble. We want you guys to be completely bug-free.

As you’re probably already (painfully) aware, most web hosting companies are way behind the times when it comes to PHP. Joomla 3.0 requires PHP 5.3.1, so there’s a pretty good chance your provider isn’t ready yet anyway.

To get an idea of what we’re talking about, just take a look at these official documents:

Potential backward compatibility issues in Joomla 3.0 and Joomla Platform 12.1

Joomla! 3.0 Alpha-2 Released

In the meantime, our developers are already hard at work converting all of our templates and extensions, making sure that the upgrade process will be as streamlined and painless as you’ve come to expect from YouJoomla. More than just a site redesign, we spent a lot of time listening to your feature requests

and ideas, and we’ve implemented just about everything we could think of. We’ve made so many improvements to both our web site and our way of doing business that it’d be impossible to list every single change here, but let’s take a look at a few highlights.

Aside from the obvious visual style changes, we’ve improved the navigation and made it easier for our customers to find what they’re looking for. We added a one-of-a-kind filter and search system for our product groups to help you get to the template, theme or extension you need faster.

The category list and the product view now both include full screenshots so you can preview right away before you explore further. Digging even deeper, we’ve enhanced our product demos with a truly awesome filter system that allows you to test our stuff like never before. Once you’ve made your decision, our new on-page downloading system will make it super-easy to get what you need.

We’ve also improved and expanded our help sections, making sure our new and existing customers can learn all the tips and tricks for a great web presence that we’ve discovered over the years. We’ve also revamped our blog section to help keep you on top of the latest news about Joomla!, WordPress and general web development.

We’ve added insanely detailed template documentation for all of our templates, including step-by-step installation instructions and helpful guides for everything from module positions to database creation. We’ve got it all covered.

Finally, we decided to simplify our Joomla Templates Club membership options, making the incredible values we offer easier to understand and take advantage of. For our single-purchase customers, we decided to add lifetime support to every template and extension you buy. We’ve even extended that support to all of your active past purchases, because after all, we want all of our customers to be as excited about our templates and extensions as we are.

These are just a few of the things you’ll find when you visit YouJoomla V4. Take a look around and please let us know what you think of everything we’ve done.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made these changes possible. We couldn’t have done it without
Stefan Stojanovic (our star designer/web developer),
Silviu Bobicescu (the genius behind our Joomla extensions),
Constantin Boiangu (the man with the Javascript plan),
Hein Maas (our one of a kind web designer),
James Corwin (our new marketing director), and our new additions to the YJ team:
Brian Flanagan (Blogger/Copywriter extraordinaire)
and Ed Hathaway (our newest Joomla! Expert/Blogger), who will help us provide more valuable information to our visitors.
You can get more details about these talented people by visiting our meet the team page.

Most importantly, I’d like to thank all of our customers and forum members for your unending support and valuable insights. Let’s face it: none of this would have been possible if you guys didn’t stick with us over the last few years. We appreciate it every single day.

As always, we here at YouJoomla look forward to exceeding your expectations for years to come.

Thanks again.

Dragan Todorovic - Founder

Adding a new Joomla Article

Once you have your Joomla website installed and ready to use, one of the first items of business is adding your own content. With Joomla, this process is easy and can be done

in just a few short steps.
First, log into your Joomla administrator portal and mouse-over the menu called ‘Content’. Within this drop-down mouse-over the first menu item called ‘Article Manager’.

Another flyout menu will show called, ‘Add New Article’. Click onto this option.

The page that comes up (Article Manager: Add New Article) is where you will create a new article and assign this article specific option settings unique to this specific article. First you will want to create a title, assign this article to a specific category and adjust this article’s setting (right hand side) to your needs. Once this is done, you are ready to type in your article inside the ‘Article Text’ (text editor) area.

Once completed, click onto the ‘Save & Close’ icon (top right) and your masterpiece will be saved into the Joomla database and you will be taken to the main ‘Article Manager: Articles’ page.

This is where all of your existing Joomla articles are located and by default it shows the most recent articles first. At this point you will want to assign this article as a new menu item for the
world to enjoy.

To do this, mouse-over ‘Menus’ and scroll down to ‘Main Menu’ where you will see a flyout menu called ‘Add New Menu Item’ and mouse click on this item.

You will be taken to the Menu Manager: New Menu Item page and here is where you will assign your article to a Joomla menu and set the different options available to you for this specific menu item.

First let’s click onto ‘Select’ (Step 1) from the ‘Menu Item Type’ (top left) and select what will be associated to this menu item. For this tutorial, we want to select ‘Single Article’ from the popup box.

Next we want to choose what article we want associated with this menu by clicking onto the ‘Select / Change’ (Step 2) button on the right hand side of your screen. When this is clicked a popup box will come up showing you a complete list of available articles to choose from. Scroll through this list a select the article you just created.

At this point you will want to type in your ‘Menu Title’ (Step 3) and finally tell this menu where to reside within your menu tree from the ‘Parent Item’ drop-down option (Step 4).
To complete this process, click onto either ‘Save’ or ‘Save & Close’. When you visit your website’s frontend you will see this new menu item where you just assigned it.

Please Note: This tutorial is nothing more then showing you how to create a new article and assign it as a new menu item. There are a host of specific options in both the New
Article and New Menu section you just created that will allow you to fine-tune your article & menu presentation. All of these settings are optional and do not require you to
adjust them just to create a new article or new menu item.
