Similar to how I do it CP.

I open each image and create a solid layer of colour over the whole thing.
Then I have a blank canvas to do whatever I want with.

Default Installing a template
Uninstall the demo zip, you will find all the instruction you need there. You can also watch the How to install Joomla 1.5 video tutorial this will give you some idea of what you need to do.
